If you do decide to tow the tarpon, go slowly – no wake! It takes a lot of dead bait to be really effective. Crabs are used a smaller percentage of the time, but when the tide is falling or we have low light conditions there are moments when they are the only thing Tarpon eat. I change my lines once a year now, I never used to do that. This can be a very exciting way to fish, especially when one boat has 3 or 4 one-hundred pound Tarpon hooked on at the same time.
The tail is large and the dorsal fin has a long strand coming off it- easy to recognize as you bring the tarpon to the boat or shore. Braided lines don’t stretch much either – so you feel everything, every bite. Use a large circle hook and an 80 lb monofilament leader to combat the tarpon’s scaly jaws.
