A high level Champion can RAIN DOWN PAIN ALL DAY LONG 24/7!!! A max level battle master gets an extra 6d12 damage, or an extra avg ~40damage per short rest. The Champion is all about sheer combat prowess. There is nothing wrong with the Fighter class, and Battlemasters and Eldritch Knights are Bad Ass in there own right as well. I still prefer the Champion to the Battlemaster because I hate having limited resources to manage to get the most out of my class. Feats allow not only special combat abilities and other possibilities, but they also give a character an opportunity to be a little different, possibly to be unique within one’s party. Compare, for example, to level 20 moon druids, who can wild shape as a bonus action each turn if they want, forever. No race is truly more prone to becoming a champion as normally these individuals appear wherever they are needed. Bonus Feats: The epic gains a bonus feat (selected from the list of epic bonus feats) every levels after 20th. A battlemaster only 19%.

Does the Paladin's Aura of Protection affect only either her or ONE ally in range? Why is the centre of mass of a semicircular wire outside the body? When rolling a 20 for a Death Saving Throw, can you move and take Actions that turn? Fighter's don't get too many non-melee strengths (although an archery battlemaster can be effective).
In short, every champion is a very efficient crit fisher.
Secondly, the Champion still has plenty of options available, no small part of which are the number of Ability Score Improvements or Feats available to such a character.

Champion isn´t made for the "competitive guy" it´s made for the guy who wants to play a fighter with cool armor and a sword and just attack people. Champions of a repressed people might focus more on hit and run tactics than toe-to-toe slug matches with the local city watch that serve the corrupt ruler.
This also gives a +8 to all diplomacy checks to the Champion and any of his followers. Even when dropped to below 0 hit points the Champion can still fight and act normally.

I'm a pretty decent master of the system(or at least I like to think that).
If those who are neutral or friendly with the Champion were to change to being hostile with him, they must make a Will save or fall prone and become frightened for 1d8 rounds. Champion Fighter 5E. Starting at 10th level, you and friendly creatures within 10 feet of you can't be frightened while you are conscious. The irony here is that in order for the Champion to shine, you have to have enough knowledge of the system to tweak it accordingly -- Half-orc, a few levels in Barbarian for Reckless Attack (generating advantage for yourself is critical) or cheesing Find Familiar, using a 2d6 weapon greataxe, probably taking the Great Weapon Master feat...it's not as simple as it seems. Those who model themselves on this archetype combine rigorous Training with physical excellence to deal devastating blows. I would bet on beast master if anything but they are all very balanced, How is it tanky?
Use MathJax to format equations. A new player who's looking for an easy 'hit the thing with my sword' time who actually wants to be decent at it could go Battlemaster, literally just spam Trip Attack or Feinting Attack, and vastly outpace an un-optimized Champion. It's why I like thief and assassin rogues, champion fighters, and now (sort of) warlocks.
When the Battle Master is out of maneuvers and the Eldritch Knight is out of spells, the Champion just keeps passing out the spankings.
